James Kenney

James has been serving in education over 14 years. Graduating from Saginaw Valley State University with his Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education and Master of Education. He began his journey as a middle school history and health teacher, but his passion within the classroom soon led to expanded roles in mentoring current and future educators; as well as leadership roles in school improvement, curriculum development and instructional coaching. Ultimately leading up to him becoming an elementary and middle school principal.
As principal, he focused on breaking down barriers and classroom silos in order to build a supportive school-wide community. James believes in the power of inclusive leadership and in the collective power we have to fundamentally shift current systems. He believes better education can only happen with intentional and sustainable support in all stakeholder’s mental health. James is committed to sharing community building practices and strategies that help bridge the gap between self and community.
James believes that all educators chose this path wanting to positively impact the lives of the students they serve, but recognizes that many are ill equipped to support the needs of the whole child. It is through Discover You that he is honored to be an advocate for building systems of care and support rooted in social-emotional understanding and positive psychology.
